The types of depression must first be understood before it’s treated.  Depression is no joke; it is a very serious disease that affects millions and millions of Americans each and every year.  The alarming dilemma is that over a third of those Americans will not seek any type of cures for depression which are available.  It’s the stereotypes associated with mental illness that plague far too many people.  People consider their reputation and what others will think of someone who is nuts.  Depression has to be diagnosed before it can be treated.  Diagnosis can’t happen until the afflicted seek help.  That’s the terrible merry go round of depression.

Many factors lead to depression.  Biological, emotional, environmental and physical factors can result in depression .  Don’t overlook the genetic link.  Family history has a major part to play.  It is not just family history but family life in general.  The stress of everyday life can be brutal.  Some undergo a daily fight just to make ends meet.  Even success and fitting into society can be the problem for others.  Then there are the circumstances where individuals have been abused physically, emotionally or sexually and are overcome with despair.  The list goes on and on.

Depression is often hard to find in its early form.  It’s hard to see the symptoms even if a loved one suffers from this illness.  Sadness on occasion is part of life.  It’s not uncommon.  Real depression is a lot more permanent and serious.  It’s already too late for early detection when the symptoms interfere with life.  Those suffering from depression tend to feel all alone and disgusted with life.  They no longer recognize any hope for their life.  Simple daily enjoyments and even sleeping are affected.  At this point treatment has become literally a matter of life and death.

Treating depression involves giving people back their hope and positive outlook on life.  Psychotherapy often accomplishes this.   It’s effective after months and sometimes years of treatment.  Anti-depressants like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celex, or Luvox can also help .  Although they have some serious side effects, these medicines work.  Studies also show that some herbs can be effective as depression treatment.  Another effective solution is a depression support group.  If you or someone you love are feeling the affects of depression please consult a medical professional immediately.
