Mark answers:

What you can do is call your dentist so they can prescribe you an antibiotic to reduce the swelling. Don’t forget to see your dentist right away. Sometime if you wait too long, you can’t save the tooth and you’ll end up taking the tooth out.

Ring the dentist and see if you can get an emergency appointment. Most dentists or dental clinics have vacancies for this sort of problem you just need to explain the situation to them.

Maybe a quick trip to the er to get some painkillers and possibly some antibiotic cover as infections can set in pretty quickly.

Good luck, i am never sure which is worse, toothache or earache.

Gums around wisdom tooth hurting?

One of my lower wisdom teeth are growing in, they’ve been growing for a while but they’re still not fully out yet. There’s a part of my gum covering the tooth, and i’m really concerned that food will get trapped there and cause an infection. For the past 2 or 4 days the gums around my wisdom tooth are really hurting, they’re kind of swollen and I don’t know what to do. I’ve tried my best not to chew on that side to avoid getting food stuck and I rinse with mouth wash, but the pain isn’t going away. I have an appointment to get that tooth out in December during winter break since it’s inconvenient to get it out on a weekend so close to SATs, but I don’t think I can last that long. Have any of you guys experienced this? Can some one tell me if there’s anything I can do other than pull it out immediately?
Thanks so much. :[

Mark answers:

Gums around wisdom tooth mostly hurt as it has very less space to erupt and the gum surrounds its crown. Food and other debris get trapped under the gum flap and cause inflammatory reactions. Also During tooth eruption there is some gum discomfort as there is inflammatory reaction setting in while eruption so for some days it may irritate your gum. But as you said its swollen, its probably due to infection developing in the gum. Rinse your mouth frequently with warm salt water every 3 – 4 hrs. Use CHLORHEXIDINE mouthwash 2 – 3 times daily for not more than 5 days. Put few drops in a half glass of water and rinse. Keep 30 minutes gap from meals. Its only to prevent further spread of infection. You have to go to the dentist if it doesn’t improve and otherwise too…

Follow proper oral hygiene techniques for better oral health.

MAINTANENCE OF PROPER ORAL HYGIENE:-

1. Brush you teeth with SOFT BRISTLE toothbrush 2 times daily.
2. Proper Brushing Technique is to brush your teeth VERTICALLY (up and down motion) than horizontally (motion while brushing to remove the bacterial plaque more efficiently and also to avoid injury to the gum and teeth in the long run.
3. Make sure that you brush ALL surfaces of your teeth.
4. After brushing don’t forget to brush your tongue with the same brush which will prevent bad breath.
5. Apply gentle pressure to your teeth and tongue while brushing. Excessive pressure can injure soft tissues and may even cause abrasion (mechanical injury to the teeth due to excessive pressure and habit of brushing the teeth horizontally)
6. Ideally, brushing all the surfaces of teeth require atleast 4 mins.
7. After meals swish water in your mouth and remove the food particles attached to your teeth and gum.

Good Oral Hygiene is a key to keep your overall health better as many diseases start from mouth and may cause systemic problems. These 7 tips can save you from number of diseases which may cause serious complications in the long run. This also proves the proverb “PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE”

Thanks

Susan asks…

what kind of antibiotics will the doctor prescribe for infected wisdom teeth?

my tooth broke in half about 12 mths and hasn’t caused me any pain, until now! The gums around the tooth are very swollen and painful. Im going out camping this arvo and want to have a few beers, anyone know of antibiotics that dont react with alcohol?

Mark answers:

I am going through the same problem. My wisdom tooth grew in and now has a cavity for some months now. The gums are sore from rubbing against the decaying, jagged tooth. I haven’t had a tooth ache yet but know one is in the near future. I am trying to get to the dentist but can’t afford a real one. I have insurance through this clinic but is hard to get in. If you can get a hold of some antibiotics go for it. Just make sure you use all of them; and get to the dentist asap. As far as I know you can drink with all antibiotics. I think it is safe. I drink with everything anyway and havent croaked yet. Good luck..

Gum Disease in toddler?

I have a question about my (almost) 2 year old.
Almost always when I brush his teeth his gums bleed,at his front teeth. The gums around the 4 front teeth looks a bit swollen also.
2 weeks ago one of his front tooth broke off. Can this be related? Can his teeth be really weak or something? It broke off by just headbutting me while I carried him.
I brush his teeth twice per day. After breakfast and before he goes to sleep.
We do not have a dentist and are on the waiting list. So I cannot just go to my dentist to ask,but I can get an emergency appointment if that is necessary.
I already went to the dentist for his broken tooth and I have an appointment on Tuesday for a check up for this. Just I forgot to mention it to her the last time. But I will remember this time!!

Mark answers:

Yes he can have tooth and gum disease especially if you were malnourished whilst pregnant
